In the name of the likes, the followers and the comments, Amen.
This project began when I started looking at the issue of body insecurities when further researching this, rather than focusing on the issue I became more interested in how culture interacts and perceives it. In recent years more and more people have used Instagram as an outlet to express their insecurities and how they have overcome them. When looking at the posts relating to personal issues such as struggles with weight loss, coming out, overcoming depression to mention a few. Researching further I realised how people turn to Instagram for support through “likes” and “comments” from friends and strangers that “follow” them. When looking closer athe the language used on Instagram I realised how close it mirrored that of vocabulary used in religion. I came to the conclusion that conceptually the youth of today treat Instagram like a religion. Reverting back to my original interest of how people confess personal issues over a global platform like instagram. In my sculpture I wanted to this phenomenon from online to offline and see if people are so willing to be as exposed and open with their problems face to face?
